In this section, we describe the areas of research on which we focus. You can find the list of publications in this link
Human-Centered AI
Implementing socio-technical systems allows us to design and evaluate systems with different stakeholders. We conduct ethnographic studies to understand how people expect to interact with smart agents and align the solution with their expectations. The resulting human-centric solutions are usually published as open-source tools so the community can adopt them.
AI For Social Good
Social networks help us understand how these tools can intervene in multiple contexts. We analyze data from social networks to understand patterns in interactions. Our interventional approach helps us to moderate and promote safe spaces.
Trustworthy AI
- We study and apply ethical AI principles to design and deploy our solutions.
- Our approach considers robustness and fairness as essential components of AI solutions.
- We study and promote mechanisms that promote explainability in automatic decisions.
- Our systems' level of autonomy and control are always considered key factors.
Crowdsourcing
- We apply the Wisdom of the Crowd as our primary principle to enhance human and algorithmic capabilities.
- Our approach includes human-in-the-loop techniques to develop complex workflows where humans can assist.
- We aim to help crowd workers improve their opportunities by developing tools and skill development mechanisms.
- The technology developed can help give more transparency and recognition to crowd workers.
