Underwater search and rescue combines extreme physical demands, poor visibility and high stakes. Funded by the U.S. Department of the Navy, this interdisciplinary project develops human-autonomy teams in which autonomous systems relieve the cognitive and physical limitations of human divers, and humans compensate for the limitations of autonomy.

Qualitative studies with search-and-rescue professionals and hazardous-environment teams identify where autonomous teammates are needed and how tasks should be delineated (HFES 2025, IEEE CogSIMA 2026). Led by Ph.D. student Cecilia Delgado Solorzano, the lab compared a specialized open-vocabulary detector (YOLO-World) with a multimodal vision-language model (Gemini 2.5 Pro) for object presence detection across low, medium and high visibility in a synthetic underwater simulator, showing when each paradigm should be deployed (ICECET 2026).
